Battle’s Over: A Nation’s Tribute at St Oswald’s Church

IMG_1074Lower Peover is playing its part in Battle’s Over, an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I.

Organised by Pageantmaster Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Battle’s Over takes place on November 11th 2018, with events throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and at scores of locations overseas, including New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Bermuda, France, Belgium, Canada, the United States and Germany, to name but a few.

In Lower Peover, the event will begin inside St Oswald’s church to the sound of the Mereside Brass band. The commemoration will begin around the war memorial with the reading of ‘The Tribute to the Millions’ by Knutsford Town Mayor, Peter Coan and the Act of Remembrance. The bugler, Lewis Frost, will sound The Last Post to begin the 2-minutes silence along with buglers at more than 1,000 other locations.

At 7.00 p.m. the WW1 Beacon of Light will be lit signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war.Then at 7.05pm the St Oswald’s bell ringers will ring the church bells as part of Ringing Out for Peace organised in association with the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers along with over 1000 churches and cathedrals across the country.

Returning inside St Oswald’s church a commemoration event will include readings, tributes, reflections, and music by Jo Farrow and the Catenian and Friends Male Voice Choir.

Refreshments, including cake made to a WW1 recipe, will be available at the interval.
